MANFAAT DAN TOKSISITAS PINANG (Areca catechu) DALAM KESEHATAN MANUSIA
Keywords:
Areca catechu, oral cancer, shizophreniaAbstract
Areca nut or Areca catechu (AC) is a multifunctional plant and has long been cultivated by local communities in Indonesia. Various ethnic groups in Indonesia and the other countries have been used AC as a medicine, economic commodity and ritual material. The review of this article aims to reveal the relationship between AC utilization and its bioactivity. The writing of this article is based on the study of scientific literature published both online and offline using the keywords Areca catechu, areca nut, and AC bioactivity. The local communities in various parts of the world, including Indonesia, use AC seeds as the main ingredient or tabah for betel. The betel causes color changes in the oral cavity and teeth. Consumption of AC has a positive impact to overcome microbial growth, anti-shizophrenia, anti-inflammation and improve memory. The negative effects of AC consumption such as oral cancer, neonatal syndrome and hyperglycemia. Further studies are needed on the consumption of AC by local Indonesian communities so that their negative effects can be minimized.
